Grain crushing / grinding

More and more livestock farmers are processing their own grain into feedstuff by crushing or milling it on the farm. With a hammermill, disc mill or grain crusher from Jansen&Heuning, grain crushing and milling becomes a controlled and cost-efficient part of the feeding process.
Milling or crushing grain yourself lowers feed costs, minimises losses and allows full control of product quality. Processing only what is needed at the time creates flexibility in feed supply and prevents waste. The entire process takes place on site, without reliance on external suppliers, which increases operational reliability.
Both the crushing and milling of grain require solid machinery that is tailored to the conditions on the farm. Jansen&Heuning’s solutions combine durable construction with easy operation and low maintenance requirements. Thanks to the short payback period, the investment in an in-house installation is economically attractive and future-proof.

Grain crushing and milling for efficient grain processing

Grain crushing or milling is essential for a controlled and efficient processing process within the agricultural sector. By processing grain itself, it creates control over particle size, reduces losses due to dust formation and preserves feed values. Jansen&Heuning supplies various machines for grain crushing and milling, tailored to the desired result, the type of product and the available capacity. The three main variants are the hammermill, the disc mill and the grain crusher.

Milling grain with a hammermill

The hammermill grinds grain by hitting it against a sieve with a rotating rotor. This sieve contains perforations that determine grain size and throughput. The rotor is equipped with several hammers, which intensively pulverise the product into a constant fraction.

This technology has proven itself over the years to be reliable and maintenance-friendly. Direct operation generates hardly any heat, which is beneficial for feed quality. Parts such as hammers and sieves are easy to replace. Depending on the type of grain and the selected sieve diameter, the hammermill achieves a capacity of about five tonnes per hour.

Milling grain with a disc mill

A disc mill works on the principle of two opposing discs, one stationary and one rotating. The grain is ground by the adjustable distance between the discs. Unlike the hammermill, no sieves are required, giving flexibility in setting the desired grain size.

The distance between the discs is infinitely adjustable and can be adjusted even during operation. This makes the machine suitable for varying product properties or feeding purposes. The discs used are wear-resistant and last between five thousand and ten thousand tonnes on average before replacement is necessary. Compared to a hammermill, a disc mill consumes about ten per cent less power. Standard capacity is around six tonnes per hour, with heavier versions of up to twenty-four tonnes per hour available on request. The absence of freely moving parts means noise levels are significantly lower, offering advantages when installed near workstations.

Crushing grain with a grain crusher

When grain does not need to be milled but crushed, a grain crusher offers a solution. This involves passing the grain between two rollers, flattening the product into a coarse structure. This method limits dust formation and prevents loss of the grain’s feed value.

The crushing distance between the rollers is preset and adjusted to the grain type and desired structure. As the grain is not crushed during the crushing process, heat generation remains very limited. This contributes to consistent feed quality. Jansen&Heuning’s grain crushers are suitable for crushing wheat, barley, maize and oats, among others, and achieve a capacity of up to about two tonnes per hour. This makes them a practical solution for livestock farmers who want to process smaller quantities of grain in-house.
